Defining and Correcting Symmastia

Symmastia, also known as uniboob or breadloafing is a post-operative problem that requires a systematic approach and innovative surgical techniques. This condition is a rare, expensive and difficult complication to repair. Along the obvious distortion of the breasts is the pain and discomfort.

In order to correct this condition, implants pockets of the breast should be expanded using a special lighted retractors to create a room for these implant to be repositioned further apart from the midline known as Internal Bra procedure. This will create a better separation and a more pleasing appearance to the body.

Symmastia can be developed to improper implant placement that can be a cause of the following:

v  failure in the attempt  to increase a cleavage

v  tissues are being cut improperly, allowing the implant to drift away from its intended position (pocket may be too big for the implant)

v  Implants being placed might be oversize especially to petite patients. This is because the skin is more prone to pulling from the chest bone

v  tissues that connects the breasts have been weakened and stretched

Risks and Complications of Symmastia

Bottoming Out – usually observed to thin women. Implants descend far from the chest wall resulting for the nipple to sit too high.

Lateral Displacement – this occurs when the breast pockets is too wide at the sides of the chest.

Double Bubble – essentially a double chin look of the breast
