Understanding Mastectomy

The surgical procedure to remove the breast is known as Mastectomy. This is a standard treatment for breast cancer patients but with the option of removing the entire breast or just a part of it, prior to the stage of cancer, size of tumor, size of the breast and involvement of lymph nodes.

 

Types of mastectomy surgery:

Total or Simple Mastectomy – breast tissues and nipples will be removed

Modified Radical Mastectomy – breast, lymph nodes under the arm and lining over the chest muscles will be removed.

Lumpectomy – tumor and a small amount of tissue around the tumor will be removed

Possible Risks of Mastectomy

Sensitivity to touch within the treated surgery – irritated nerve endings may result to touch sensitivity. Sensation will be improved as the nerves grow back.

Incision Site may experience numbness and tenderness – this happens due to the nerves that were cut during the surgery.

Occurrence of fluid under the scar – it may be a result of hematoma or the accumulation of blood in the wound or seroma, the clear fluid in the wound.

Delayed healing of wound

Formation of scar tissue – scar tissues may build up after the surgery. Sometimes, it is lumpy and painful.

 

Increased risk of infection in the surgical area
