What is Mammoplasty/Mammaplasty?

Mammoplasty/Mammaplasty is defined as set of procedures done to modify the size or shape of one’s breast. Generally, there are three categories of mammoplasty namely breast reduction, breast augmentation, or breast reconstruction.

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that is done with the aim of reducing the size of one or a pair of breast. This procedure involves the decrease on the amount of excess fat, glandular tissue, and overlaying skin. This type of mammoplasty is also used in reshaping one’s breast.

Breast augmentation, on the other hand, is a procedure that uses breast implants or fat. This is common to those who want to have an increase on the size of their breast. Through breast augmentation, the volume of the breast can be restored. This is the usual cases on those who have lost the volume of their breast due to weight reduction or pregnancy.

The third category, breast reconstruction, is done to those who have undergone removal of breast due to some medical reasons. Through this surgical procedure one is able to rebuild the breast mound thereby making the breast returned to its original size and shape.

Why One Opt for Mammoplasty/Mammaplasty?

There is variety of reasons why one would opt to undergo any of the discussed categories of mammoplasty/mammaplasty.

Breast reduction is most often than not done for medical reasons. Patients undergoing this procedure usually feel pain over their back or on their neck. Through breast reduction, they would be able to relieve themselves from such pain as the size of the breast would be decreased. Subsequently, patient would be allowed to do normal stuff such as going into an exercise which they normally were not able to do because of their very large breast.

Others usually opt to have breast augmentation to have an increase on the projection of their breast. This procedure is also done to have the balance figure of an individual improved. More so, breast augmentation can help in the attainment of better self-image and confidence among women.

Breast reconstruction is a common procedure that is done to those who have undergone breast removal. This procedure makes one’s breast return into its normal shape and size that has been altered due to medical reasons such as the acquisition of breast cancer. However, this medical procedure is not advisable to those who have just undergone a lumpectomy or those whose part of the breast was removed.

How Long Does it take for One to Recover?

After having the procedure done, the patient would be subjected to recovery period before she can return to normal. Usually, it takes couple of weeks for one to recover from mammoplasty. There would also be some limits with the chores one is doing before the procedure. This state could last for a month or so depending on the extent of the procedure being applied.

You do not have to do lots during your recovery period. All you have to do is to ensure that you keep yourself and your surrounding clean without any agent that can trigger infection.
